One Liners - Film Reviews

One Line Film Reviews by Speedy

Baseball:
42 (2013): A well-done film, with strong acting and the right touch of humor, about an important part of baseball and America.  Especially enjoyable to watch if you've read up on those times (see blog for some options).

Brian's Song (1971): One of my favorite parts of this film, aside from the tight dialogue, is the way it shows Brian and Dale's growing relationship/ careers.  Instead of showing separate shots of great touchdowns and then the two becoming friends, these two parts are combined through voice overs by the football parts.  It doesn't bore those that don't get football and it keeps the story very tight and specific.
Eight Men Out (1988): Great film, great acting, vivid portrayal of Black Sox Scandal.
Field of Dreams (1989): Okay I know this film gets pretty good ratings and it's a great father-son film, but really? Does no one else think the story is just a little bit weird?
Moneyball (2011): Good film about a great book, there's not a lot of action and even when things heat up its not for the ultimate World Series win, but its made to tell and share a story and so it does.
Pride of the Yankees (1942): A sweet, sentimental tribute to Lou Gehrig, great for kids and compiles most of the myths and stories of this iconic player.
The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg (1999): A really great, enjoyable biographical film of an all-time baseball great.
The Natural (1984): Absolutely formulaic, you know the story before it starts, but still a good baseball film.

Basketball:

Boxing:
Cinderella Man (2005): Its a boxing drama so we all know the story but the acting, the telling, and everything else about this film is superb.
Million Dollar Baby (2004): I don't think I was as inspired with this film as I was supposed to be but it's certainly well made and inspirational.
Real Steel (2011): Standard script, cliche lines, and an illogical premise of very advanced robots and computer technology that did not enhance anything else in the world, but the film's CLEAN and safe for kids and family.
Rocky (1976): I can't understand a word Stallone says but he's perfect in this.
The Fighter (2010):A really great film but, truthfully, Christian Bale is the one to watch for his dynamic performance.

Hockey:

Football:
Friday Night Lights (2004): Admittedly, I ruined a great film by watching the incomparable TV Series first.
Friday Night Lights (2006) TV Series: Brilliant, excellent depiction of small town football and the story keeps moving by changing up the characters but still keeping adequate tabs on the old ones
SNL - Tim Tebow Skit (12/2011): Very funny, Tebow's great for football and even greater for entertainment.
The Blindside (2009): There are no surprises in a story like this but that doesn't mean its not an inspiring football drama.
The League (2009) TV Series: No need to know anything about football to enjoy this show.  Hilarious, a real guy's show, and who is the evil mind behind "The Dre's" clothing?
The Replacements (2000):  This film is definitely fun and there are a few moments that make you laugh, otherwise its typical and a little sappy too.

Golf:
Caddyshack (1980): It took me two tries to watch this all the way through, its weird, illogical, crude but very quotable.  Besides, it taught the proper method for tequila shots "so at least I have that going for me."

Misc:
Nacho Libre (2006): A clean film, a little bit weird but oddly entertaining.
The Onion - Sports: It's The Onion, it's hilarious, tops so far:

Soccer:

Surf:
Blue Crush (2002): Okay, I know its a chick flick but is there a story here or it just an excuse to show chicks surfing?
